International Women’s Day celebrates the achievements of women and encourages further action to drive gender parity. Globally, 36% of small businesses are now owned by women, and from 2015 until early 2020 the number of females in senior vice president positions in the US increased by 5%.
This is great progress, but there’s still a way to go to achieving full female representation in the workplace. A fact that is evidenced by women holding 38% of manager-level positions in the US at the start of 2020 compared to 62% of men.
Unfortunately, research indicates that COVID-19 has also disproportionately impacted women. McKinsey found that women, particularly women of color, are more likely to have been furloughed or lost their job as a result of COVID. Further challenges of the pandemic, such as needing to take care of children and family members, are also resulting in a significant number of women exiting the workforce. This is because females, particularly mothers with young children, are faced with a heavy post-COVID burden, with research showing they are 3x more likely to bear the responsibility of housework and care-giving.
So, why does bridging the gender gap in the beauty and wellness industry matter?
Today’s consumers want and expect greater gender representation in leadership, with 42% even admitting they would pay a premium to a business that visibly committed to diversity and inclusion in its organization. Therefore, brands that ignore this very real expectation risk alienating a large percentage of their target consumers. Additionally, having a well-represented leadership team ensures a comprehensive understanding of your many audience members, expands creativity through multiple varied perspectives and fosters innovation.
A Harvard Business Review study also shows that businesses can benefit from diversifying their leadership representation as those who boosted their leaderhip share to 30% achieved a 15% increase in profits.
Take note of these evidence points this International Women’s Day and reap the numerous positive impacts of investing in and welcoming female leadership in your business.
